A Weighty Matter at London Zoo
The annual weigh-in at London Zoo took place on 19 August 2024, and the keepers were not in a hurry to record the weights of all the animals they were attending to. This is a yearly exercise where all the residents of the zoo are assessed on their health and general fitness from insects to mammals. Weight and measurements of each animal are recorded in a computerized database known as the Zoological Information Management System or ZIMS which is used by zoos all over the world to keep records of health, breeding and other factors of the animals. The information collected is utilized for the treatment of the animals and it is also applied in the protection of the endangered species.
