Oxfam: A Beacon of Global Humanitarian Efforts

OXFAM

Oxfam is a worldwide federation of 20 affiliated independent organizations, known under the name of the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief. Oxfam International is a confederation of 20 independent organizations that operate worldwide, was established in Oxford, England in 1942 and has been a leading humanitarian organization that has achieved much in the fight against poverty and injustice.

Oxfam was founded during the Second World War, initially, the organization’s aim was to help the starving population of Greece by supplying food. The organisation was originally created to fight famine and hunger, however, it has evolved to address different aspects of poverty such as poverty inequality, human rights, and sustainable development.

Oxfam in Action

Oxfam is a name of a global movement of people working to end the injustice of poverty worldwide, and it has millions of members in more than 90 countries. Oxfam’s varied activities, which range from large-scale humanitarian relief to grassroots activism, take place across continents and are all driven by the same vision: to build a society in which every single person will be able to find his or her place and be happy.

CLEAN SAFE WATER

Disease follows disasters, often killing more people than the initial emergency. So Oxfam acts quickly with others to provide clean water and sanitation, and help prevent deadly diseases spreading.
Installing irrigation systems to kickstart farming, fight famine and help people earn a living.
Too often, people have no choice but to drink dirty, unsafe water, and to use toilets, taps and containers that spread disease. That’s why Oxfam campaign for everyone to be able to access the water they all need.

FOOD FOR ALL

It’s not right that 1 in 9 people go to bed hungry. Which is why Oxfam work tirelessly with their partners to help people put food back on their table, today and tomorrow. When people lose their homes, jobs, crops or livestock, they go hungry. Cash grants can tide people over in the worst of a crisis. Supporting local small businesses to grow food and keep livestock means people can earn an income, live sustainably, and keep feeding their families and communities.

TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is being felt most by people in countries that have done the least to cause the crisis. A more equal world is possible. One where any of them at risk from the climate crisis have what they need to survive extreme weather and build sustainable futures for generations to come. Tikeshwori Malla is part of a women’s groups that helps smallholder farmers deal with the impacts of climate change in Doti district, Nepal. Ali Shire Omar is growing food in Somalia with support from Oxfam.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND GENDER JUSTICE

It is in the interest of all when all women are paid decent wages, have decent working conditions and are able to be heard. Oxfam empowers women to assume leadership positions, to protest against whatever laws and policies that are inimical to their welfare, and to fight for their equality. Emergency can impact the female and male population in a very different manner. Just as girls and women require light at night and separate toilets in camps to be safe, secure and healthy in refugee camps.

Conclusion

It is strictly dedicated to eradicating poverty and injustice, which have made the lives of millions of people better. Therefore, Oxfam continues to be a leading international organization that effectively implements humanitarian and development interventions, and advocates for poverty eradication and social justice. It is rather important to note that the mission and the values of Oxfam are still pertinent to the world and its development as the challenges that the global society faces evolve.

Oxfam, a well-established charitable organization, would generally involve people donating, volunteering or raising awareness about the issues like poverty eradication, disaster response and social justice.Encouraging people to share Oxfam’s mission and immediate financial support.
