In today’s world, inequality is rising at an alarming rate, intensifying poverty across the globe. But it’s a myth that resources are scarce or that we must choose between the wealthy and the impoverished. Oxfam stands firm in its belief that a fairer world is possible, where resources and opportunities are shared equally. Together, change is within reach.
What Does a Fairer World Look Like?
A more just world implies that all the people starting from a clean sheet can have a decent and equal chance at getting a job and quality education and, in general, a reasonable amount of income to rise up the level of a decent life. It means a world where everyone wakes up and doesn’t have to face injustice, or where everyone gets to have a fair chance in life and have full control over their lives, to not only live but to be able to prosper as well. For the last 74 years, Oxfam has been promoting this vision: the world they want by striving for making the world a place in which everyone will count.

Tackling Poverty and Inequality
Poverty is not an act of fate, it’s a deliberate decision made by politicians that often cater for the whims of the elite and not for the needy. Oxfam works to bring an end to this situation where people are imprisoned by their choices. Through its efforts to challenge inequality, Oxfam continues a never-ending task to alter the underlying structures that help perpetuate poverty while supporting the agendas of those on the receiving end.
How Oxfam Tackles Poverty:
- Promoting the cause of more just policies of development and distribution of wealth

Achieving a Safer, More Peaceful World
In some of the most challenging environments across the world, millions live in poverty as well as in the effects of conflict and climate change. With governments showing such care through their systems, the vulnerable that are already poor are left with no hand to be fed on hence being easily vulnerable in any crisis . Such injustices are the function of the world’s elite—the individuals who profit from such disasters while the impoverished are forced to pay the price. That is why Oxfam wants to see an end to this injustice and is convinced that it is, in fact, possible – as long as there’s a concerted effort made.

Working for Climate Justice
Global warming is one example of injustice in this world. Currently, the first world polluters that are the richest nations, corporations and individuals continue to make money from the wrong side of the ledger while the harming is being borne by the worst off and future generations. This is climate inequality. Currently, Oxfam is working for climate justice whereby the leaders who have contributed to climate change are made to answer for their actions and pay for climate change solutions.
What Climate Justice Means:
- To ensure that the world’s richest polluters are forced to pay for their misdeeds
- Guaranteeing that credible financial resources are available to absorb the impact of climate change on effected communities
- Calling for immediate intervention to avert negative effects of global warming
